Probe School Furniture Bids
An ex-employee of Ohio state government has been told an investigation revealed that while on the public payroll, he used 13 cents' worth of personal leave time to which he was not entitled. Pay up, he was ordered by letter.
Meanwhile, there is reason to believe contracts for furniture and other items needed for new and renovated school buildings in some Buckeye State districts are being written to ensure certain companies get the business. That can cost taxpayers tens of thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands - of dollars they shouldn't have to pay. There seems to be little interest in investigating the potential scandal.
Clearly, state government priorities are askew. While government goes out of its way to harass some people for pennies, it ignores more serious, costly concerns.
The investigation of former state employees found 766 of them used more personal leave than they had earned. All were notified by letter they had to repay amounts collected improperly. The highest amount sought was $2,849 - but many were for amounts so insignificant it cost the state more to notify them than was owed. The 13-cent example is real. Another ex-employee was told he had to repay 96 cents.
